I'm posting this as an FYI for anyone who is searching for this information like I was for the past couple of days. I found a couple of older threads here with similar problems, but no solution - so I'm posting some solutions. If you attempt to run some of the older EA Sports racing simulators, such as the NASCAR Thunder series or NASCAR SimRacing, you might find yourself unable to get them to work initially. Here are the tips I found that got them running again on a modern PC.The 3DSetup program that NASCAR SimRacing uses to detect your system specs may not work under modern versions of Windows. However, if you have the 3DConfig.exe from NASCAR Thunder 2004 (or the demo), you can copy it over to the NSR directory. Rename your 3DConfig to 3DSetup and run it. It'll do the system detection routine and you'll be able to run NSR afterward. Both the 3D configuration utilities and the game EXE's for NSR/NT may fail to run on a modern computer, giving you an error saying that you have no video memory. These EXE's are incapable of detecting more than 4GB of system RAM, so if your PC has more than 4GB it'll actually show up in the detection tool as a negative amount of memory, and fail to run.As a workaround, do the following:.
Launch the 'System Configuration' tool (also known as MSCONFIG). Select the 'Boot' tab. Click 'Advanced Options'. Enable the 'Maximum memory' checkbox, and enter a number lower than 4096 in the field below. Click 'OK' twice, and restartYour computer will reboot, and Windows will use only the amount of RAM specified in the box.
The system detection tools, as well as the games, will now load properly. You can run MSCONFIG again to disable the memory limitation afterward, and you'll be back to your full RAM count again after the next reboot.I haven't yet tried to get either game to run in a higher resolution than what's available in the tool (1024x768), this was mainly just to see if I could get them running again (because I like revisiting old games). I tried using the hex editor to look for that combination of hex characters and came up with nothing for every file I tried on NASCAR SimRacing. Any idea on what file I should be looking in to correct the hex value?
Do you have any experience with this in NASCAR SimRacing?EDIT: I am using the disc version, which installed files to my HDD. I am making the setup file changes on the installed content and using the disc to AutoRun the game (from setup.exe on the CD) as running from the NascarSimRacing.exe does not produce results.
Do I need to be using a no-disc exe too?. For NASCAR SimRacing, I tried setting the system memory to under 4096 in MSCONFIG, however, that did not solve the VRAM problem. The config.ini file is still reading -7MB video memory. Odd part is, my card has under 4GB of memory (3GB GTX 780), so it doesn't fall under the 'more than 4GB' error. Any idea on what could be going wrong?
I'm thinking that it may be a driver thing. Also worth noting that I did the switch of the 3DSetup file from NT2004 to NSR and now that diagnostic tool works. As an update, I got it working! I had to download a no-CD fix to get around the unsupported DRM. However, it did not run immediately after that. I also did some messing around with the Hex code of the 3DSetup (not sure if this was the original one or the one from NT2004, as I was switching back and forth between the two trying to get it to work), and this edit made the program print 99MB VRAM in the config.ini file.
Did this make the difference? Probably not, but I'd like to think I made the solution myself! I'm able to run it without the RAM limit now.
But I think the primary thing to suggest would be to get a no-CD fix because Windows decided to stop supporting the DRM used in a lot of these games.I should note that while NSR works with the no-CD fix, getting NT2004 to run has been unsuccessful thus far. I think that I will try running it in the reduced RAM mode and see if that helps this time.
NT2004, when using the same 3DSetup/3DConfig as NSR, reads a negative amount of RAM, while NSR reads a positive amount of RAM. Maybe my computer just hates me.
